Some Examples of Computer Forensics

I am sure that at one time or another we have all accidentally deleted an important file from our computers and at that moment thought all was lost because we could no longer access the deleted file. Or how about the time you password protected a file only to try and access it months later and discover that you've slept since then and can't for the life of you remember what the password was. And how about the time that you pushed the on button for your computer and as it starts to boot up you get a message that says something like "hard drive 0 not found" and it stops right there, no Windows, no nothing!

Let's say that you are an employer and you've had the unfortunate task of letting an important employee go, only to have that employee not take it so well and delete all of the files from his PC before he leaves, important files for your business. Maybe you are married and in the unfortunate position of feeling that your spouse might not be just surfing the internet every night but rather is having a late night rendezvous with an online companion. Or how about being an attorney knowing that the information on a computer can make or break the case for your client, pinpointing the exact time that files were accessed.

And then there is the sad story of the corporation that has the Senior Network Administrator that decides he has had enough of the rat race and just stops showing up to work, forgetting to tell anyone what the administrator password was to the network. These are just some examples of situations where computer forensics can be of help to you.

At The Starken Group, we have specialists trained in data recovery, password recovery, evidence discovery and just about anything else that entails retrieving information from a computer system or storage media. The important distinction that separates us from "the computer guy next door" is that we not only have the certified training as computer hardware, software and network technicians, but most importantly the background and extensive forensic training to conduct a sound computer forensic examination so to ensure that the data remains unchanged by the examination and if needed is admissible in court.

Almost anyone can turn on a computer and look through the drives to see if there are files listed. To forensically look at a computer system, you must be able to look at the file structure of the system without leaving any traces that you were there and without changing the file system in anyway. To do this you must have the specialized training, software and equipment used by professionals in the computer forensic field. Not all information is retrievable, but more times than not it can be recovered, even those "deleted" files or passwords that you thought were lost for ever.
